Vedado District

Is a central business district and urban neighborhood in the city of HavanaCuba.

Considered by many the heart of the Cuban capital, the construction of El Vedado began in the late nineteenth century and reached its peak in the first half of the twentieth century. There are most institutions, businesses and shops. The main ministries, banks, airlines, travel agencies, shops, theaters and cinemas.

Model of urban development, was characterized by the harmonious combination of streets and avenues populated by trees, portals and manor houses of the most varied styles, predominating the eclectic. His subsequent evolution led him to combine buildings, cinemas, restaurants, schools, public institutions that were completing his urban plot but without losing the charm of its walks and tree-lined streets where the monumental residences of past times are still present, whose number is possibly not It exists in no other city in Cuba.

Today it is rediscovered by architects and urban planners from all over the world who admire its beauty and elegance.

The Avenidas Paseo (formerly called Avenida de los Alcaldes) and the Presidents (or also Calle G) are two of the most famous arteries in the neighborhood that advance from the political center of the city to the boardwalk.

The opening of the Cemetery of Columbus in 1871, is one of the key milestones in the development of urban architecture within the area. Its significance transcends to this day as one of the most beautiful and important cemeteries in use in Latin America and the world, which constitutes a Cultural Patrimony of the Cuban nation for being the second most outstanding cemetery in the world due to its sculptural values , and the first of all America.

Another important point of the Vedado is La Rampa, name that assumes the street 23 from the corner of L towards the north until the Malecón. It is a center of pulsating life, with cinemas, hotels, restaurants, the headquarters of important ministries, advertising and tourist agencies and called the heart of the city.

In the Vedado is also the Plaza de la Revolución, former Civic Square, with the monument erected to commemorate the centenary of the birth of the Cuban apostle, José Martí. This square has become a center for political demonstrations and cultural activities. It also includes buildings such as the headquarters of the National Library, the Palace of the Revolution (seat of the government), the National Theater, etc.
